...the Laich-Kwil-Tach Research Centre in Campbell River!

The folks at the KWT Research Centre have been working on a Liq’wala language revitalization project, “to assert and protect our identity as Laich-Kwil-Tach people.” Their mentor-apprentice program has already resulted in more language fluency in the community, including four Mentor-Apprentice teams. The apprentices were trained in an immersion environment and are teaching the language to others.

The next goal for the project is to create immersion preschools. The funding given by Kleanza will be used in a pilot project to pay language speakers to work in the classrooms at Kwunwatsi preschool. Program. The funding will cover 60 hours of language instruction over 6 weeks. We are happy to know that the grant money will have a direct impact on children’s language acquisition in the Laich-Kwil-Tach community. Congratulations to Deirdre and her colleagues at the Laich-Kwil-Tach Research Centre.

Please join us in congratulating the participants and students at the Kwunwatsi Preschool and the LKT Research Centre!
