.... Tiinesha Begaye!

Tiinesha is a fourth-year student in the Archaeology Department at Simon Fraser University. Tiinesha’s ultimate goal of acquiring a BA in archaeology is to conduct archaeology in her home community of Similkameen and to help other local First Nations communities record and protect their archaeological heritage. As she told us in her application, “I would like to provide my services in protecting and preserving important cultural, traditional, spiritual sites for the benefit of aboriginal people and future generations.”

Tiinesha has begun to gain hands-on experience in British Columbia archaeology, including two years of fieldwork with the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, based in Hedley. Her other accomplishments include a National Aboriginal Professional Artist Training Certificate, and being awarded best female artist of the year in the 2010 Native American Music Awards We are happy to present this award to Tiinesha in her final year of undergraduate studies, and we truly believe she will make a positive impact on Indigenous archaeology in British Columbia. We are especially impressed that Tiinesha has achieved so much academically and in the field while also raising small children.

Please join us in congratulating Tiinesha!! Well deserved.
