What do we do

Culturally Modified Tree (CMT) Assessments

A CMT is a tree that has been altered by First Nations peoples as part of their traditional use of the forest.

Tree use and the use of wood products was an important aspect of traditional aboriginal life on the northwest coast. Many traditional tree uses produced modifications or scars that are identifiable today.  Cedar bark strip scars on the Northwest coast analyzed using dendrochronological methods, have been dated back as far as the 1500’s.

Individual CMT features may be protected by the Heritage Conservation Act, and should be examined by a professional to determine the appropriate management option.

If you think your development may contain CMTs, please contact us.
