Advanced field and lab skills course bundle

Course bundle includes:

KS210 Introduction to lithic archaeology. 

Upon completion of this one-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • define lithic analysis
  • recognize the significance of lithic belongings
  • describe the characteristics of lithic flakes
  • identify stone tool types
  • recognize the relationships between stone tool diversity and archaeological site function


KS211 Introduction to archaeology of animal bones.

Upon completion of this one-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • define the archaeology of animal bones
  • recognize the significance of animal remains in archaeology
  • describe the characteristics of animal bones
  • identify species of mammals and tally specimens
  • recognize the relationships between subsistence practice and archaeological site use


KS213 Culturally modified tree awareness and recording.

Upon completion of this one-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • define culturally modified trees (CMTs) physically and legally
  • recognize different CMT site classes, types, and attributes
  • identify tree growth cycles and CMT transformation processes
  • recognize areas with CMT potential
  • produce a CMT record form
  • produce a map of a CMT site
  • produce and submit a CMT site form


KS214 Wet site awareness.

Upon completion of this half-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • define a wet site
  • recognize the significance of wet sites
  • identify under what conditions wet sites are preserved
  • know what to do if a wet site is found
  • discuss field and laboratory techniques
  • explain the importance of wet sites to communities


KS220 Introduction to site forms and RAAD.

Upon completion of this one-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • recognize why sites are recorded and protected under the HCA
  • develop an understanding of the history the history of site inventory
  • recognize site types
  • recognize each area of a site form package
  • illustrate how site forms may support local heritage interests and goals
  • practice site form completion and submission


KS222 Google Earth for archaeology.

Upon completion of this half-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • identify spatial data files, types, and show how to switch coordinate systems
  • demonstrate how to import spatial and non-spatial data into Google Earth
  • define and show how to analyze data in Google Earth
  • identify and show how to create new spatial data
  • identify and show georeferencing essentials (time permitting)


KS223 D-stretch for rock art.

Upon completion of this half-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • recognize types of rock art sites
  • recognize how rock art sites are protected
  • demonstrate how rock art sites can be documented and analyzed
  • recognize uses for DStretch and ImageJ


KS230 Reviewing and tracking permit referrals.

Upon completion of this half-day, online course, learners will be able to:

  • Define the permit referral process
  • Explain how responses to permit referrals can represent local heritage interests and goals
  • Record permit referrals
  • Interpret permit referrals
  • Prepare a response to a permit referral
  • Respond to and track permit referrals

How many students can register?

There is a minimum number of 8 students, and a maximum number of 16 students required for each course to run.

How much do these courses cost?

The entire Advanced field and lab skills bundle costs $2140 ($400 for each full day, $200 for each half day; including a 10% discount for students who register for all 8 courses in the bundle).

Who is this course bundle designed for?

These courses are designed for Indigenous communities who wish to increase their skills in support of managing of their own heritage, archaeology professionals who wish to refresh their skills or gain new ones, corporate clients who want to responsibly integrate archaeology and heritage into project timelines and budgets, and for all learners who want to modernize how they think about and work with archaeology. 

What do I need to participate in these courses?

For most courses, learners will need to have access to a computer (not tablet) with camera and microphone to complete these courses and will have required software downloads (i.e. Google Earth Pro) and readings. Learners are expected to be able to use email Microsoft office, complete online and paper worksheets, and in some cases complete field-based exercises.

What is gained upon completion of these courses?

Upon completion of each individual course, a sticker of completion is issued, which can be added to your Kleanza SEEDS Passport. This passport is a record of all the training you have taken, as well as a log book for all your days in the field, lab, and office, in support of learners becoming recognized Field Directors and Permit Holders, according to BC Archaeology Branch and BC Association of Professional Archaeologists Standards.
